HTTPS PROTECTION FOR EVERY WEBSITE

SSL Certificates, Explained Clearly

Every website should use HTTPS. Web Host Pro includes automated SSL for standard hosted websites, while wildcard, multi-domain, and organization-validated options are available when a project has more specialized requirements.

Encrypt Connections

TLS encrypts information moving between a visitor and your server, including logins, forms, account activity, and checkout data.

Authenticate the Website

A trusted certificate helps the browser confirm that it connected to the hostname named in the certificate rather than an impostor.

Protect Data in Transit

HTTPS helps prevent information from being read or modified while it crosses networks between the visitor and the website.

Use HTTPS Everywhere

HTTPS is the modern baseline for public websites, not only stores. Browsers and many web features expect a secure connection.

Automate Renewals

Certificates expire by design, and lifetimes are becoming shorter. Automated issuance and renewal are safer than relying on calendar reminders.

Protect the Private Key

The private key must remain secret on the server. Replace the certificate and rotate its key immediately if exposure is suspected.

Free AutoSSL or a Specialized Certificate?

Encryption strength is not determined by whether a certificate is free or paid. Choose based on hostname coverage, validation requirements, support, and how the certificate will be managed.

For special requirements

Wildcard, Multi-Domain, OV, and EV

A wildcard covers many subdomains beneath one domain. A multi-domain certificate covers specifically named hostnames. Organization Validation and Extended Validation add organization identity checks by the issuing Certificate Authority.

These options can help when policies, integrations, hostname coverage, or business validation require something beyond automated domain validation.

Compare SSL Options

How HTTPS Setup Works

Most hosted websites complete these steps automatically. Manual certificates use the same underlying process with additional validation and installation work.

Point the Domain

The domain's DNS must resolve to the hosting server so certificate validation can reach the correct website.

Validate Control

The Certificate Authority confirms control of each requested hostname through an approved validation method.

Install the Certificate

The server installs the certificate with its matching private key and intermediate certificate chain.

Redirect to HTTPS

After testing, redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS and update internal resources so the entire page loads securely.

Common SSL Problems and Fixes

A valid certificate is only one part of a secure HTTPS configuration. These are the most common reasons a website still reports a problem.

“Not Secure” After Installation

Confirm the requested hostname is covered, then clear browser, application, and CDN caches. Check that the page redirects to one consistent HTTPS hostname.

Mixed Content

An HTTPS page may still reference images, scripts, styles, fonts, or downloads over HTTP. Update those URLs to HTTPS and use the browser console to locate blocked resources.

AutoSSL Validation Fails

Check DNS, domain ownership, redirects, and whether a firewall or proxy prevents validation. The hostname must resolve to the correct server during issuance.

Cloudflare or Reverse Proxy

Use a valid certificate between the proxy and origin, and prefer strict HTTPS validation. DNS or proxy settings may need temporary adjustment during origin certificate issuance.

Hostname Mismatch

A certificate for one hostname does not automatically cover every subdomain. Confirm the exact domain, www version, and other names appear in the certificate SAN field.

Expired Certificate

Check renewal logs, domain validation, DNS, account status, and server reachability. Fix the underlying error before manually repeating renewal attempts.

Need help? Web Host Pro support can review DNS, AutoSSL status, certificate coverage, redirects, mixed content, and proxy configuration. Never send a private key through ordinary email or place it in a public ticket attachment.
